Chapter Nine – Keeley

Chance had acted differently since he offered to get me tickets to a Red Sox game that was happening the following weekend. Originally I had wanted to ask him to be my date, but my fear got the best of me. The embarrassment of being turned down by a Ridge Rogue that I lived with would be too much to take, and awkward, to say the least. Instead, I’d been on the search for someone tolerable to take to the game. Jolee and Sarah had tried to help, but they didn’t realize that I had zero desire to find someone. It was just a means to check a box off my list.

Walking around campus, I was pleased to see a couple of different students grabbing the confession boxes' positive messages spread across the campus. At first, I thought Colleen was nuts to put something like that in place. Almost everyone at Wellington Ridge University was so far into themselves that they would never confess their secrets to a stranger; they’d rather pay thousands of dollars to the onsite therapist.

The first advice column for this semester was going to be published on Friday and I was interested to see what the students had to say. It was tempting to ask for my own piece of advice regarding Chance and the bucket list. Would they tell me to go for it or ignore the pull that I had toward him? What about my father? Would the advice editor tell me that I should live my own life or continue on the path of a stable and secure job?

I had no idea that living with Chance would have me questioning everything.

Walking toward the library, I got flashes of my time hiding in the stacks when I was homeless. That time felt so long ago but was only a week and a half. As I walked inside, I feared that a security guard was waiting to take me away; somehow, they’d found out that I had been sleeping there.

Making my way to the third floor that I frequented so often, I found a table not far from the secret door I’d discovered. I was still curious about when it was used last.

The college was established in the 1980s, not too old, but it had functioned as a boarding school before then. The secrets these walls could tell.

“Hey,” a deep voice called out as I was busy emptying my backpack. I looked up and found a good-looking guy I recognized. He lived across the hall from Link. We’d said hello a few times in the stairwell and at the mailboxes, but I didn’t know his name or anything else.

“Hi. You live in the same apartment complex as me, right?” I asked as I finished setting out the material I needed to go over with Chance.

“Yeah. I’m Kyle,” he said, holding out his hand. I glanced down and noticed how well-manicured and soft it looked compared to the rough and callused palm and fingers of Chance’s.
